August 2016 Newsletter

I know that us creative, artsy types are supposed to be flitting about with our heads in the clouds, distracted by every pretty flower and shiny thing. Certainly I know some artists who fit that bill, and truthfully I'm a bit envious of them. I have never fit the above description, and can still recall the day a college musician friend called me "the coolest anal person" he knew. I think it was a compliment.

Like so many of us, I am usually juggling several different balls at once. While it's gratifying that some find this to be artistically impressive, I know they're just distracted by the movement and not seeing the several other balls I've already dropped on the ground. It doesn't take much to make me drop one, either. This summer, all it took to derail me was an incident with a charging laptop, a lawn sprinkler and an open window. Summer is never my most productive season to begin with, and not having the computer has made it particularly challenging to stay on top of my list of things to do.

Usually, I'm on top of my essay, distilling insights from my life, bringing it all back to how it relates to my music, but this month...I got nothing. I haven't gotten my repaired computer back yet. I've got a bunch of gigs, both this month and looming on the horizon for fall, and I'm trying to take the few remaining weeks to be a cool dad giving his boys a great summer. I've got a lot going on and I am grateful you would be interested to learn more, but really, why are you sitting in front of your computer?

Go jump in some water (fresh or salt), eat a ripe tomato, have a cocktail. When you get a free moment, check out the gigs below, and hopefully I'll see you out there real soon.

*a song from Bill Morrissey's final record, Come Running. Check it out HERE.

"FOR A SONG" LPs: All the kids are listening to vinyl, and now you can too. I've been trying to get the LP edition of FOR A SONG pressed for months now, and it's finally available starting 8/15. If you're a Kickstarter, I'll send your copy in the mail to you soon. If you want to pick one up for yourself or a friend (or both!), click HERE.

MP3 of the MONTH: I don't have my computer, remember? I wish I had something a bit more high fidelity for you this month. I did manage to steal the audio of a new, summer-ish song from a YouTube video and get it up on my Bandcamp site for your enjoyment. It's a live version of a tune called "Up Country," and I'm joined by a who's who of Boston-based musicians. You can watch the video of it HERE and try to names to all the familiar faces. You can download the song HERE or free for the month of August. Enjoy!

**opening for/playing with LORI McKENNA

Thu Aug 4 - City Winery, New York NY - 8 pm**
NYC can be a daunting place, but the folks at City Winery always make you feel welcome. I'll be opening for my fellow Bostonian, friend of 20 years and folk big sister Lori McKenna, so I anticipate feeling right at home.

Sat Aug 13 - The Sinclair, Cambridge MA - 6 pm** (SOLD OUT)
Man, I didn't even get a chance to tell you about this one yet and it's already sold out. But really, Lori McKenna, in her hometown...what do you expect? Better be quicker on the draw next time around.

Fri Aug 19 - Stone Mountain Arts Center, Brownfield ME - 8 pm** (SOLD OUT)
Damn, are you detecting a trend here? Sold out here too, but you should come see another show at this venue sometime. It is, literally, my favorite place to play.

Sat Aug 20 - Spire Center for the Arts, Plymouth MA - 8 pm**
Another fine venue, and at least as far as advance tickets go, sold out! BUT you can contact the venue at (508) 746-4488 and inquire about additional seats which might come online the day of the show.

Sat/Sun Aug 27-28 - Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Shrewsbury UK
Barnstar! rides again! It's been months since we were all even in the same state, but we have one gig on the books...in England. Had a great time at this festival last time they brought us over and this time should be no different. We play the mainstage just before Rosanne Cash on Sunday, so that's not nothing.

All the sideman gigs I'm doing this month I'm opening as well, and they're listed above.

Sept 9-11 - Sisters Folk Festival, Sisters OR
Nov 4-5 - Moab Folk Festival, Moab UT
Nov 18 - Club Passim, Cambridge MA
Dec 3 - South Shore Folk Music Club, Kingston MA
