Hillbilly Pilgrim

cover of Hillbilly Pilgrim

released 2004   Signature Sounds

New England singer/songwriter Mark Erelli shifts trajectory from his usual rockin' rootsy approach to classic Western Swing, and we're all the better for it. For the uninitiated, during the genre's heyday (1930-50), Western Swing exemplars Bob Willis, Milton Brown and Hank Penny combined smooth Western balladry with the blues and hot, danceable big-band swing and Dixieland jazz. Hillbilly Pilgrim does the form proud, as it's brimming over with wry, heartfelt songcraft, invigorating tempos, pedal steel gutiar dazzling as an Arizona desert sunset, and Erelli's genially-suave-yet-down-home singing. With the assistance of The Spurs and guest vocalists Erin McKeown and Kris Delmhorst, Erelli has crafted a near-perfect album.
